There are many rent-a-car companies in major towns. Many provide chauffeur driven vehicles too. Rates are very reasonable to travel around the county and a guide cum drivers are available at most places. This is the most recommended way to travel around the country as your drive / guide will know all the major tourist attractions and best shopping centers. Note; Some tour guides also act as agents for various merchants.

Tuk Tuks or three wheelers, commonly called as trishaws are in abundance all over the country and good for very short distances. There are new taxi companies with well maintained sedan cars operating from Colombo city and could be used to go to almost any destination.
Condition of the roads are generally good (being a developing country) and it is easy to find your way to main tourist attractions, but there are no expressways in Sri Lanka. However the road manners of the Sri Lanka drivers are simply non existing and civilized drivers would be annoyed by their rudeness, (and would ruin the chance to enjoy the beauty of the country).

For those who really want to drive themselves may want to know some local driving manners; Sri Lankan Drivers, do not know lane dividing lines are there to drive within one lane, never signal before changing lanes, right of way is not followed and do not know speed limits exists.

Private van hire with a driver is available at almost all towns. True rates are less than those of a rental company vans but tourists are often charged more. It is advisable to contact them through your hosts to avoid being over charged. Quality of the cars varies and should verify the air conditioning is in order.
